The very busy Spider

The Very Busy Spider
By Eric Carle
(Philomel Books, 1984)

A delightful picture book for very young children. The story is about an industrious, web-building spider, which ignores the farm animals attempting to divert her from her work. Finally, when her web is complete, the web catches the pesty fly.

The 2E like to participate as the story is read to them by feeling the raised silk of the spider’s web as it grows throughout the book and finding the raised fly on opposite pages. In addition, they learn the sounds of some of the most common farm animals - horse "Neigh, Neigh-Go for ride", cow "Moo, Moo-Eat glass", sheep "Baa, Baa-run in meadow", goat "Maa, Maa-jump on the rock", pig "Oink, Oink-roll in the mud", dog "Woof, Woof-chase a cat", cat "Meow, Meow-like a nap", duck "Quack, Quack-go for swim", rooster "Cock-a-doodle-do-catch the pesty fly" and owl "Whoo, Whoo-come at night".

Well, we build the spider-web on the brownie. I am thinking, it is an excellent book to read at bed-time too, since it ends with the spider falling asleep after a “very, very busy day.” Daddy and Mummy are tired too.
